Today Lorena Ramírez Hernández becomes the first Rarámuri woman to compete in a European ultra-marathon.
The world knows Lorena's community by the name handed out by Spanish conquistadores–Tarahumara – but they self-identify as Rarámuri, which means “light feet” or “runners on foot” in their language. Running is in their blood, a skill cultivated for generations of communicating across long distances in northern Mexico. Lorena competes in marathons just as she runs every day: in a long, tiered orange dress, and recycled rubber sandals.
