In Bihar State, one of India's poorest, alcohol historically has consumed much of men's income, leaving little to nothing for their families, and fueled violence. Women had had enough. They organized to inspire a candidate for Chief Minister to promise to ban alcohol, delivered his election, and are now their own enforcement force in making sure the ban is a success. The secret to making it all work, says the Chief Minister, is a relentless social and political campaign that resonates powerfully with women: "Only when you have the women behind you can you succeed."
