Caterina, the “Catrinka” who inspired it all, turned 5 yesterday. We are celebrating her and thinking of all of the little boys and girls – 7 million of them in 2011 – who won’t make it to this milestone. In two of our countries – Afghanistan and Sierra Leone – 19% of kids died before the age of 5 in 2009. 2/3rds of these deaths are from preventable causes. One of the best ways to to have an impact is to educate girls – a child born to an educated mother is 50% less likely to die before the age of 5. We are recommitting ourselves to do what we can to make a difference in the year to come.
