The women behind the huipiles:
We have loved the La Flor de Xochistlahuaca cooperative for years, and are thrilled to bring their work to you. Each of these handmade huipiles (blouses) is one of a kind, hand woven by three women: Doña Isabel and Doña Adela, both master weavers, and Doña Silvia, one of the youngest generation of weavers in the cooperative. They weave with locally grown cotton, in traditional designs.
The cooperative is formed entirely by Amuzga women, and was started by Doña Florentina de Jesus, in part to create a community for women who were often left behind when their husbands went to the US to work. It is now a vibrant home for workshops and social gatherings, and offers classes in backstrap weaving to the next generation of girls, starting as young as 5.
Doña Isabel is married with a son, and her work with the cooperative helps to support her family. Her husband is a farmer.
Model: the incomparable social justice advocate, lawyer-in-training (and original Catrinka brand ambassador) Laura, who we came to know through her work with the DPE Foreign Service Sorority, a wonderful partner of ours. Shot on location at Pioneer Works.
